The OpenALPR commercial engine is the state-of-the-art license plate recognition software. Benchmarks that demonstrate this fact are presented below. Click the benchmark links to see detailed results:
|Benchmark||State Recognition||Top 10||Top 1|
|Open Source (Easy Set)||0%||71.19%||49.15%|
|Open Source (Hard Set)||0%||32.56%||23.26%|
|Commercial (Easy Set)||100.00%||100.00%||98.31%|
|Commercial (Hard Set)||96.43%||97.67%||95.35%|
These samples were randomly selected from a set of annotated images and then sorted into two groups: easy and hard. The easy set represents the types of results you may expect when you setup your camera optimally (i.e., minimize capture angle and provide adequate lighting). The hard set represents more challenging environments where the camera angle, lighting, resolution, or other factors may not be perfect.
If you find yourself thinking, "these numbers look too good to be true" we understand. Don't take our word for it. We highly recommend testing the software yourself. To make this as simple as possible, we have placed our benchmark plate images, annotation utility, and testing toolset online so that you can reproduce these tests, as well as run benchmarks on your own images.
